This ratchet is heavy duty and is used with large tie down straps. It is for oversize and large loads. A ratchet consists of a round gear with teeth, and a spring-loaded pawl that engages the teeth. When the teeth are moving forward, the pawl easily slides up and over the edges of the teeth. When the teeth move in the backward direction, the pawl will catch against the sloped edge of the tooth, locking it and preventing any further motion.
