Today we will be discussing some of the must-have flatbed products and highlighting some of our top of the line and durable flatbed products on Shippers Supplies.
Meeting the Demands of the Trucking Industry
The flatbed trucking industry is responsible for hauling some of the heaviest and most dangerous items on the roads. With all of that weight on the back of your truck, there is no room for low-quality cargo control products. The heaviest hauling demands high-quality products, and we believe that we can meet the demands of each of our customers with our vast product line!
Load straps are an important part of any flatbed trucking job. Many times the cargo transported comes in irregular shapes or size, and can be extremely heavy and bulky. Load straps are used to make sure that those large loads are secured properly to the flatbed. These load straps can be the difference in the load making it safely to its destination!
An important characteristic of any load strap is durability. Since flatbeds are open, these straps will be exposed to rain, wind, and even snow, so durability becomes an extremely important feature! Our Load Straps are made from a polyester material that resists cuts and scratches. Polyester is also resistant to water and UV rays, which is very important in the flatbed industry.
Our Load Straps are available in 2-4 inch widths, with Working Load Limits ranging from 3,335-5,400 pounds. The two main kinds of straps that we have for flatbed uses are ratchet straps and winch straps. Ratchet straps are made up of two pieces, a short end, and a long end. There are typically hooks of some kind on both ends and a ratcheting mechanism in the middle that is used to increase tension.
The winch strap is different because it is made up of only one piece. One end of the winch strap has a flat hook while the other has nothing. The end with nothing on it goes into a winch on either side of the flatbed. Winch straps are used to secure larger loads and are usually longer than ratchet straps. Winch straps are designed to be paired with our flatbed winches that will be discussed in detail later in the article.
Load straps are extremely durable, but that does not mean they are invincible. Even the most durable straps are susceptible to damage even if they are used properly. It is very important to check your straps periodically for many reasons. First and foremost, damaged straps should be checked because they could snap and cause you to lose your load. Secondly, huge fines can be handed down from organizations like the Department of Transportation for using load straps that have significant damage. The safety of other drivers on the road is a huge concern and should not be taken lightly.
Flatbed winches are a staple of the flatbed industry. You will rarely see a flatbed on the highway without them. They are used to secure the winch straps to one side of the flatbed and to roll up the excess strap in an organized and accessible way. We offer three different variations of flatbed winches here at Shipper’s Supplies: Lashing Winch, Bolt-on Winch, and Slider Winch. While all of these winches serve the same purpose, there are some small differences in their installation and use that make them unique.
The Lashing Winch can be welded or bolted to a flatbed and used with our two-inch webbing. It includes a quick release feature to make your tie down experience even faster. Our 4” Portable Bolt on Winch can be mounted anywhere on the side rail of the trailer.
These portable winches come with two set screws that allow you to move the winch to a position that would be best for you. Sliding winches are designed to move in both directions on the trailer. They pair with our winch track to give you a versatile winch setup for any load you may be hauling. Simply place the winch where you want it and tighten it down to secure. The tension in the strap will keep the winch in place and keep your load safe.
In the flatbed industry, there are many items that are difficult to tie down and transport. Large coils of steel and other materials have to be near the top of the list. These items are extremely difficult to secure because of their tendency to roll. Since these coils of material are large and typically heavy, failure to properly secure them could cause serious problems! Coil racks are a great way to solve those problems altogether!
Coil racks are designed to be paired with wooden blocks to provide a cradle for the heavy metal coils that are often transported. Our coil racks are built with a heavy gauge steel construction for lasting durability and are available in 32” and 39” lengths. The reinforced ends help to maintain the heaviest loads by providing an extra layer of protection on the load-bearing parts of the rack. These racks allow the coils to be safely tied down and transported without the risk of rolling off of the trailer.
The idea behind the transportation industry is ultimately to get items from point A to point B safely and intact. Intact is an important part of that idea. Anyone can transport items when they do not have to worry about the safety of the items themselves. Flatbed truckers do not have this option. That is why many professional truckers use corner protectors.
When using ratchet straps to tie down items for transport, it is important to have a buffer zone between the straps and your cargo. Ratchet straps need to be tightened to secure loads, but they are often rigid and tough and can dig into certain items if there is no layer of protection there. This is where corner protectors come in. Corner protectors are a great way to prevent damage from the tough nature of the transportation industry. They provide a much-needed barrier to ensure that your load makes it undamaged to its destination.
We offer corner protectors that can either be attached to the strap itself or can simply be placed on the load itself wherever needed. They are constructed from heavy duty plastic and are designed to bend and contort to prevent breaking.
We have aluminum sideboards, plastic corner guards, and steel chain guides to protect your load no matter what you are hauling! Keeping your load safe and secure is our job and we strive every day to make it easier for you to keep your customers satisfied and returning!
